JohnnyDieRoten - An Eagle in the camp

A new Breed of Histon Fan
by John Payne

I must admit that Histon FC is rather new to me. I am very much a Johnny-come-lately who had not ventured through the turnstiles at the Glassworld Stadium prior to The Stutes reaching the Blue Square Premier League earlier this season. I realise there are some long-term fans who will not regard me as a “proper” Histon supporter and some who will even resent me jumping on their bandwagon. I can understand that, but it won’t stop me from irritating those people even more by admitting that I don’t even live in Histon! Family tradition dictated that from a very early age I should be a Crystal Palace supporter and I have stayed loyal to the club of my birth-place ever since I was introduced to football by my father some 45 years ago. Indeed, I am still a season ticket holder at the Palace, as I have been since moving to Cambridgeshire over 20 years ago. However, the cost of following a Championship club, coupled with the increasingly difficult journey to South London, has made me question the wisdom of keeping up this tradition.

The rise of Histon FC over recent years could hardly have gone un-noticed by any local football fan, and I am no exception. So, more out of curiosity that anything else, I ventured down to the Glassworld Stadium back in September for the match against Weymouth. I didn’t really know what to expect, having only ever been to the ground once before some 15 or so years ago; and that was for a car boot sale! The only experience I had of non-league football was through watching Palace in meaningless pre-season friendlies against the likes of Bromley and Dartford and those dodgy live games the BBC put on from the early rounds of the FA Cup. So, I wasn’t expecting to be entertained by slick Arsenal-style passing moves or Ronaldo-type trickery. That said, the stuff I’ve been paying through the nose to watch in the Championship over the past few years has been pretty dyer.
