A Style Guide to Gates
by Jasper

The forum seems to have an ongoing debate these days about poor attendance figures. Well it’s a funny old game as the saying goes. You do have to wonder at times just what the club has to do to prise some people away from the Emmerdale Omnibus or reruns of Strictly come Prancing!
It has been commented by some that the reason is our style of play, with Becky having a little too much control over style and, in part. that probably is true. When I first started following the Stutes we played a lot more ball on the ground than we seem to do these days. I am all for results, but sometimes our percentage game can be both a little predictable and a little boring. To top it all it has become a topic much mentioned in press and rival programmes, along the lines of “effective” and “efficient”.
Personally I would prefer us to try being a little less predictable and efficient and knock it around more. Entertainment is the name of the game and although it can be exciting to watch Adie’s long throws hurtle into the opposing penalty area I also like it when we occasionally foray down the wings and across the box taking the ball with us as we go. Please ignore those that say we do not have the players to suit a ball playing style because we all know different. I invited a friend to the Burton replay recently and he said that we have some very clever and skilful players that need releasing from their strait jackets. This from a man who was once on the books of Southport and Manchester United (at the same time as Bestie and Charlton). The guy knows his football. As he rightly said, there is always a place for the long ball but not for the entire match. Burton set themselves up, as so many have now they know our style, with some large and effective centre backs and looked to play the ball through us. I admit that if our finishing had been more effective we could have taken them quite comfortably but was it entertaining?
